What Made Me Decide to be a Birth Videographer?

What Made Me Decide to be Birth Videographer? | Manila Birth Videographer

I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker.

I didn’t realise I needed to finish Architecture in college, improve my communications skills in the call centre, learn to do selling and marketing, be a creative designer and a graphic artist, be an architectural designer again and be a virtual admin assistant first before I could be a filmmaker.

My learning experiences and job exposure may not be what makes a good filmmaker but I’ve learned a lot along the way. Skills were acquired. Several realisations. A few turning points. And tons of hours of dreaming, questioning, doing, believing, taking risks and just simply making it happen.

And now I am here in the world of filmmaking starting out from zero. Not in the mainstream media, neither in the indie-side of the filmmaking world, but in the videography business.

So what made me decide to be a birth videographer? Why focus on birth?

Well, between photography and film, I love film better. I love taking videos. I love editing. I even love making videos out of still photos and eventually make a story out of it.

One of the greatest turning points in my life is when I proposed to my ex-girlfriend and now my fiancé and my future wife. I made a proposal movie for her and I prepared for 3 months to complete the movie and propose in front of our 30 friends with more than 100 people who participated in my film. And I am so happy and blessed that she said “YES!” to me on April 13, 2013.

I realised that I can do such thing for long hours, even with no sleep, even without pay and I am still happy doing it. I believe that’s what passion is about.

I randomly grabbed my book called “What Would Google Do?” on the evening of May 14, 2013 and decided to just pick a short topic from one chapter and the topic is entitled “Do what you do best and link to the rest.”

So that made me question myself, highlighted the lines that I like and started writing notes on my journal.

What Do I Do Best? I believe it’s FILM.

But I know for sure I cannot go back to school and study film. It’s not a practical thing for me to do in this season of my life. I might someday, but not for now. I also know that I cannot start sending my resume to the film outfits and television networks just to gain experience. Again, it’s not practical for me. I know in my heart that I must build a business of my own. I know that I must use my entrepreneurial skills and combine it with filmmaking which I both love.

Should I go do ‘wedding videography’ just like everybody else? I sincerely believe I cannot.

We have a lot of wedding videographers already in the business. And I know I cannot be THE Jason Magbanua.

Jason is one of my biggest influences. I just truly love his work. I want to be like him. But I also want to be my own brand.

I want to be Dads Valencia.

There are a lot of reasons behind this but one thing is for sure, it’s not a selfish ambition. This is NOT about making my name known. This is something BIGGER than myself.

So I started thinking of other important events in a person’s life other than a wedding. So I thought of birthday. As in BIRTH DAY.

And there goes my AHA! moment that night.

I even wrote this on my journal. “If Jason Magbanua is for Wedding Films, Dads Valencia is for Birth Films.” Aha! I got a BIG DREAM in there.

And that’s how it all began. I got that ‘this-won’t-make-me-sleep-moment’ again that I haven’t had for a long time. I began to be excited. Ideas are pouring in. Thoughts in my head are shouting. I know I needed to keep myself calm and ask God’s confirmation on this humongous task.

And so I did. And I got a confirmation from my bible reading that night.

“I will surely bless you and give you many descendants. And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.” – Hebrews 6:14-15

If you will check the parallel verse from this Hebrews verse to the book of Genesis, you’ll have this verse:

“I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand in the seashore.” – Genesis 22:17

We all know the story of Abraham whether you are a Bible reader or not. Personally, he is one of my favourite Bible characters and even played his role when I was in grade school for a play competition. So these verses really spoke to me. And it dawned on me that this is what God want me to do.

It was not a coincidence that I got the name “Dads”. I realised that there’s a purpose behind it. I will be like-a-daddy to many children someday. To all the babies I will be filming their birth, I will always be a part of their life journey. I was there in the first day of his or her life in this world.

And having this biblical foundation, I believe ‘speaking blessings’ to these children will have a great impact to their lives and to their destiny. It’s not just about a money-making business.

There’s a bigger purpose for this. Every film that I will be creating someday will always be a precious treasure in the lives of many moms and babies, and dads too.

And that evening of May 14, 2013 is truly a revelation.

That’s the day that a new dream is born.

I am Dads Valencia and I am privileged to have been given a special task to be a Birth Videographer.

What is a Birth Film?

What is a Birth Film? | Manila Childbirth Videographer

I’ve been getting a lot of wide-eyed reactions when I’m trying to introduce Birth Films to my friends and to people who are being introduced to me.

I kinda expect those kinds of reactions and responses. This is something new to them and most of them will start having pictures in their heads how uncomfortable it might be to watch someone giving birth on video.

But we’re not talking a Discovery Channel or medical school type of filming here. Just simply think of a wedding film. It’s just like that, the difference is, this is about the birth of a new being in this world.

Birth Film is a visual storytelling of a baby’s birth.

It’s the best way to tell a story of a new life that will begin. A new life that will be showered with love and care. A new life that will discover the beauty and the wonders of this world one day at a time.

Not only it tells a story of a little baby’s first day on Earth, it also tells the story of the journey of a mother showing her enduring strength and love for her baby whom she carried inside her womb for nine long months. It’s their journey together and that very special laboring and birthing moment can never be taken away from them. It also tells a story of a father-to-be. Truth is, he is a big part of the team. And ‘dads’ play a very special role in this birth story. He shouldn’t be holding a camera to take photos and videos of those memorable moments. He should be ON that moment itself, holding the hands of his wife, giving her the most powerful affirming words of love and care and praying for his wife and his baby that he is about to hold in his arms.

This is what Dads Valencia Birth Films is all about. To tell a story of new family being born together anticipating a new life and a new beginning for all of them – as one.

Keilah’s Birth Story

Keilah’s Birth Story | Dads Valencia Birth Films from Dads Valencia on Vimeo.

This is Keilah’s Birth Story. It’s the birth of a new life in this wonderful world. A life of discovery and adventures. A life of new beginnings for a baby girl who will one day be a lady. A lady who will be a ‘stronghold’ of God’s destiny for her and her family.

Though it is not just a birth for a little child. It is also a birth of a new mother in Sheryn. A new role she will embrace for the rest of her life. A role that will transform her to an unconditionally loving mom.

This is a story that captures the precious moments of Keilah’s first day on earth. Her first look with her Grandma and her first bonding with her Aunt and Godparents. It also tells how amazing it is to have that first breastfeeding and first skin-to-skin with her Mommy. A wonderful emotion captured on film and will forever be treasured and always be fresh in the memories of the people who truly love her.

This is a birth story that is also a fulfillment to the dream of the storyteller behind the camera. A dream is born. A promise is fulfilled.

This is the first birth story for a lot of us. Keilah’s Birth Story is our story.
